Ekin Cheng, Hong Kong’s latest Heart-throb is here!
Catch him live at Singapore Indoor Stadium!
This much-awaited concert is finally here. Touted as the 5th “heavenly king”in Hong Kong, Ekin staged his first ever concert in the Hong Kong Coliseum in February this year. Fans can look forward to re-enactment of his “Netvigator 22098 concert in HK”, and much more, when he hits town on 5 Dec.With the stage experience gained from his February concert, as well as hits from his new releases in September, Ekin Cheng in Concert ’98 promises to bean enthralling experience for many. 5th Dec 1998, about fifteen minutes past 20:00 the hall lights faded away.The 4000-over crowd welcomed Ekin with thunderous and enthusiastic applause. He appeared in front of us singing the opening song “22098”. The upbeat song and his elegant costume and the dancers around him reminded me of the 22098 concert in HK. That excitement revived on me. Ekin showed his rich and strong vocals in his performance, even though he had just arrived in Singapore the night before and had little time for concert’s rehearsal. As you who went to 22098 concert know, he took off his long coat and black shirt piece by piece. He sang “Sahara” and “Running on the road of love” with a strong rhythmic beat. The overall audience’s responses were very good. They were waving two glowing light sticks (blue and red). [Before the concert, some fans asked people attending the concert to bring two light sticks of these colors through internet. What a wonderful preparation!!] Ekin tried to talk to the audience in Mandarin. I thought all Singaporean fans must be so grateful for his attempt and effort. Unfortunately I don’t understand Cantonese or Mandarin. But I can tell you that Ekin seemed to enjoy spending time with his fans in a place other than HK: Singapore. At that time, he expressed his gratitude to his fans from Taiwan and Japan! Yes! Finally we could hear “Thank you, Japanese Fans” from Ekin when he saw our message board “Japanese fans support Ekin”. It was my happiest time.
The next two songs “The sensation of kissing” and “Till the end of heavenand earth” proved Ekin’s great improvement in his singing skill. He received a lot of flower bouquets and he held them up instead of saying thanks.
Can you guess what came next? The huge screens above the stage showed an”unknown person”. The guy looked tanned with a tiger-striped jacket and leopard-spotted pants came on stage with muscular men and sexy girls. Here-enacted some scenes from the movie series as Haonan in the songs,”Friendship in passing times”, “The evaporated tears”, “Your me”. I could feel some sentimental grief from his voice when he’s singing “I would have gladly be in your place”, even though his lover Saisailarp was not there.
The show brought us to a different world. After “Who else could have lovedyou as deeply as I am”, the special guest Jerry Lam came on stage singing the opening song “22098” and mimicking Ekin’s dance routines in aleopard-spotted suit. You know, his roly-poly style was so funny. He waswelcomed by all audience with big laughter. Before all were aware, we found a cute smile on Ekin’s face. In the next 20 minutes, we had a kind of variety-game show where 12 lucky fans went on stage. In the game, people had two color (red and yellow) boards and competed against each other by holding up the right color board according to Jerry’s instructions like “Hung sik” or “Wong sik”. Ekin kept smiling throughout the game show. This was the natural Ekin on stage. I thought it was a little strange gap between his gorgeous black outfit and his natural, friendly smile. In the middle of his concert with “Discovery” and “Open your future” beforeintroducing his band members, all audience enjoyed keeping pace with Ekin’s continuous powerful energy. Then he stepped down the stage for a hand-shaking session, the crowd surged towards him like a gust of wind. Actually it was easy for them to run to him, because there was a seating arena without a fence. At last he could not move beyond the first few rows because people were pushing and squeezing to reach him, so he had to give up and went back on stage.
The following show left favorable and fresh impression on us. The screen was showing The Making of “My paper ring”. Suddenly we saw a man in a cute, casual style of white sweatshirt with big fancy collar (I can’t describe right word) and white pants. He sang two songs from “My paper ring” in Mandarin, “Feeling as if a knife were deeply piercing my heart” and “Flying with you”. Ekin is very good at pleasing his fans and managing the concert atmosphere.
Full of energy and wildness, Ekin brought the heat back to the stage with “A guy who’s willing to cross the fire sea for you” in a bright red suit. This is a cool guy! He’s not only good looking but he’s also good at singing and dancing.
Ekin tried to stepped off the stage again. He was undeterred by the earlierexperience. He asked the audience to promise not to rush and push. He managed to walk around the stadium for another hand-shaking session with devoted fans following him while singing “The same second”. Ekin came back to the stage and I could see the satisfaction and confidence in his sparkling smile. He brought the show to an end with his favorite song, “My song”.
Our hankering for encore called Ekin back to the stage. He wore a simple red hooded jumper with cream color pants. This seems to be the real Ekin. We all were cheering, singing along and waving a big fan to the songs, “Wind and cloud” and “Fireflies”. Two huge red flags were carried from one end to the other of the stage.
All audience had looked forward to seeing the next lovely part. That Hi-CLemon Tea’s advertisement was shown on the screen. All the audience screamed and screamed and swooned when we saw his young, short-hair look in early days. I was touched when I saw Ekin sitting on a step of the short stairway on stage, watching himself on the screen. He was so sweet and cute!
I realized the concert almost finished when Ekin started to sing “Lovingonly you for my life”. I wished time had stopped there forever. Probably all audience had the same feeling as me. He did great work! I had a really great time with Ekin and all fans from S’pore and Japan. Thank you so much to all my friends and Ekin Cheng***!
After this concert, my friend from Singapore told me about a review on ekin’s concert in the magazine. It’s a very good and positive review. Shetold me before that S’pore media used to criticize Ekin as an idol singer who sold his albums only by his good look. But with his good solidperformance in this concert, I’m so glad that Ekin has successfully eliminated the general bias against his singing.

12月5日（土）インドア・スタジアム 20：20頃演唱會開始
女性ＤＪのコメントのあと、トラ柄の衣裳を着たイーキンが『22098』を歌いながら登場。 あたり一面、悲鳴に近い声援、拍手でつつまれました。力強く、伸びた声。ＣＤを聴いているのかと錯覚を起こすほど。コートを脱ぎ捨てたイーキンは、
『撒哈拉』『情路狂奔』を続けて歌いました。私たちは、必死に蛍光棒を振りました。右に持ち、左に持ち、これがなかなか大変。このあと、ＭＣ。北京語を交えたトーク。イーキンは、懸命に北京語にトライしているようでした。北京語にしても、広東語にしても全く理解できない私は、ただ双眼鏡越しにイーキンを見てるだけ。ちょっと悲しい現実。ここで、「日本からのファンありがとう」の一言が。winnさん、eeさんの掲げたボードに気づいたようでした。この後、『吻感』『直至消失天興地』と曲は続きました。
続いて、豹柄の衣裳を身にまとったイーキンが登場、『友情歳月』『蒸發眼涙』『2尓的我』を歌い、『甘心替代イ尓』のとき、前方の巨大スクリーンには、イーキンの映画における愛の歴史が映されていました。かっこいい！（他に言葉がないのか）このあと、衣裳替え。黒の衣裳＆仮面でイーキンは『誰可情深如我』を歌いました。 さながら「香港のマスク・オブ・ゾロ」なんか、笑えてしまったのは私だけ？ ここで、私たちも「日」「本」「人」と書いたボードを掲げました。気づいてくれるかなぁ。と思ったそのとき、「ここにも日本からのファンがいるようですね」というニュアンスのことを言ってくれました。きゃー！やったー！このあと、スペシャルゲスト、ジェリー・ラムがステージへ。彼は、イーキンの踊りをユーモアたっぷりに真似て、『22098』を歌いました。会場は大盛り上がり。ここで、ちょっとしたゲームコーナーがありました。内容は、「赤あげて、白あげて」という感じのもの。勝利者にはサイン入りＣＤ、ステージにあがった全員にポスターがイーキンから手渡されました。この間、イーキンは終始笑顔。こちらまで幸せな気分になるような素敵な笑顔でした。
演唱會も中盤にさしかかり、『發現』と曲は続きました。『打開イ尓未来』が始まったとき、イーキンはステージから降りました。握手タイムの始まりです。しかし、イーキンは殺到したファンに押し囲まれ立ち往生。私たちもすごい迫力に圧倒されました。
次にスクリーンに「初夏之恋」のメイキングビデオが流され、そのあと、衣裳替えをしたイーキンが『心如刀割』を歌いながら、ステージに戻ってきました。このときの衣裳は、白のパーカーに白の革パン。カジュアルなスタイルでした。なんか、ピエロみたい。全然似合ってないわけじゃないんだけど、日に焼けたたくましいイーキンには、ちょっと不似合いだったような気がしたのでした。『陪イ尓飛（国語版）』を歌い、ステージを去っていきました。
ステージの雰囲気が変わり、イーキン再登場。衣裳は、あのスカーレット。きゃー！スカーレットイーキン。 曲は『一個為イ尓甘去蹈火海的人』。炎のダンサーも加わり、ダンサブルなイーキン。のはずなんだけど、うーん、ダンサーたちと踊りがあってない。くるっと回転したとき、コートをひらりとしたらかっこいいと思ってるふしがあるような。といいながら最後はビシっと決めのポーズ。踊り苦手でもいいよ、イーキン。かっこいいから許しちゃう。
このあと、２度目の握手タイムでイーキンはステージを降りました。曲は『同一秒』。行くべき？行かざるべき？握手してもらおうと席を離れたけど、シンガポーリアンに圧倒されうろうろ。前に行こうとしたそのとき、群衆が押し寄せてきて、ちょっとした将棋倒し状態。ひぇー！我を忘れた私は、「痛い、痛い」と日本語で叫んでいたのでした。握手タイムが終わり、イーキンはステージへ。曲は、『我的歌』に変わっていました。このとき、係りの人に遮られながらもなんとか、「スカーレットイーキン」を激写したのでした。
そして、アンコール。K-SWISSの赤のパーカーにアイボリーのチノパン姿のイーキン。『風雲』『蟲兒飛（国語版）』を歌いました。このとき、会場には大きな「風雲」の旗が。おぉー！大迫力。スクリーンには、ウワサの「檸檬茶」のＣＭの映像。高校生イーキン。初々しい！かわいい！イーキン自身も照れくさそうでした。そして、本当に最後の曲、『一個愛イ尓一個』。一生あなただけを愛する。マギーにほんのちょっと妬けちゃいました。曲が終わり、イーキンはステージから去っていきました。 あー終わっちゃった。一気に脱力感が。余韻を残しつつ、私たちは名残惜しくもスタジアムをあとにしたのでした。
演唱會の感想ですが、イーキンずいぶん痩せてました。かっこいいんだけど、ちょっとやつれてる感じがしました。あと、やっぱり歌が上達している。ハードスケジュールを感じさせない歌声でした。シンプルだったけど、パワフルで華麗なステージでした。それと、イーキンの意外な一面を発見。彼は、案外仕切屋なのかも（笑）。 というのは、歌いながら、蛍光棒をこう振って、ああ振ってと指示していました。あと、すごく気になったことが。イーキンが途中で脱ぎ捨てたコートが、最後までステージの置き去りにされたままでした。
演唱會のあと、winnさん、eeさん、じょうがうがんＰさん、ちかさん、私の５人で、ミニオフ会を開きました。短い時間だったけど、ほんと楽しかったです。興奮さめやらぬ私たちは、ちょっと騒がしかったかも。まわりのみなさん、ごめんなさい。初の生麺体験、すごくよかったです。 また機会があったらぜひ行きたいです。最後に、演唱會に誘ってくださった、ちかさん、じょうがうがんＰさん感謝してます。 そして、winnさん、eeさん、ほんとにほんとにありがとうございました。
