Mid Summer Night Fantasy” The report of Ekin’s new world
Mid Summer Night Fantasy by Sum Hui, which is the original musical was presented in 12/2-21/2, 25/2-6/3 (total 20shows) at the HK coliseum, in spite of the poor HK economy, the musical attracted 90% attendance in the opening night. The musical production cost 6 million-dollar, there were eighteen gorgeous backgrounds scenes produced for the play, the musical was romantic with fairy-tale fantasy. It was 3.5hrs of performance with 5min. break.The four actors, Ekin(Emin),GiGi, Miriam(Chinwah) and Jordan used their own names in the musical is in the result, the audience could identify more intimately with the play.
The show was opened with Jordan MC in his dashing white tuxedo, warmed up the audiences with his comedic technical lines, in the middle a staff came into the stage, pointed out the zip of his slacks has been opened. This happening was also a stage effect. These show lines gave big laughing to the audience like breaking ice. In the show I could recognize how Jordan’s variety show of talents in various roles of Hawaii native chief, GiGi’s dad, the gangster’s leader, the rock’nroller at the song contest and the lovely Cupid! The young rich girl returning from Hawaii, Miriam met Emin and fell in love with him who is a car mechanic. He has a friend of his childhood who is GiGi the kindergarten teacher. The story line is a typical tri-party romance with happy ending. I personally was touched with not only the story lines, also challenging mind for new world in HK entertainment,their great energetic performance, even they had the past two months preparing for their roles in the musical.Our Ekin and his gangs mechanics entered to the stage with performing a powerful song dynamic dance in a car garage scene while Ekin sang the song “half a pound or eight oz in measure”. Sam Hui wrote this in the past with lyrics describing lives of the working class.(At the first day, after this scene, he delivered the play dialogue with heavy breathing.)Also in the fighting scene with the gangster’s leader Jordan, much attracted me.I think all others are pro-dancers including Jordan (he was a dancer before) Ekin is the only non-professional for dancing. But he performed very very well. His steps and his moves with his red jacket were so powerful. He kept in pace with the other of the professional dancers.Ekin must have worked very hard! His dancing skill was so improved.
Our Ekin taught me he has also other face as a comedian. He made audiences laugh more than I expected. In the scene of flirting with fat girl playing guitar in the department store,bringing the goods stolen from his store back to Miriam’s house, washing a baby chamber pot etc…For Ekin’s fans, not failing to notice, Ekin showed me his multi face like dancer, comedian in his performance. But He was real our prince charming riding on white beautiful horse,Pegasus! (This horse was really like being live, so elaborated)He smiled and waving to us. He asked to the audience “Who ride on with me?” but always “Sorry, tomorrow” and take Miriam on to the horse and flied away. Yes, always, in all 20 shows!!! During the show period, for us it’s a time we didn’t feel at ease. Because Ekin did not put on his safety belt on the flying horse, and at the GiGi’s wedding ceremony he ran down the stairs fast in the dark and climbed up to the high stage. I’m proud of his courage and perfect performance.
All actors have their own energetic rich voice, and rhythmical and dynamic dancing. I’d never notice Ekin had cold and damage on his left leg at first show before reading the newspaper on following day. I’m not confident in myself to tell you the whole story line here for my language skill to understand the story. But I would like to tell you I was really touched by their performance with brilliantly and emotively in songs, dances and moves and dialogues. I truly felt that they enjoyed themselves to create their original musical, the children actors and actresses liked Ekin and GiGi and Pegasus.
At last if my words reached to Sam Hui, I would tell him “Thanks for the great creative musical, and choosing Ekin as one of your partners. I was really happy to have a chance enjoying the musical with many audiences in HK. This event will be one of my happiest things in this year ”
